Ros Plunkett (Whitman, née Prince)

Ros Plunkett was a long standing, well respected and popular member of Fleet United.  She held the position of Ladies Captain in 2014 as well as being the club secretary for a considerable period during the 1990s and into the 2000s. Ros was very knowledgeable about the sport that brought her a lot of success and pleasure and was always happy to offer advice and guidance to anyone who asked. At one time, Ros worked for Mars (although not on the confectionary side, she was PA to the management team) and frequently brought bagfuls of chocolate bars to the club, much to the delight of the members!

Ros and her then husband Tom (Whitman) organised many a barbecue and fun day, often accompanied by a fancy dress theme; (St. Trinian’s was particularly successful) and she wasalways on board regards organising our Fleet United BC Ladies’ Day.  She was often involved in the catering when the club held county or competition finals on our green, either men or ladies.  Ros and Tom often ran our domestic competitions, which were always very well organised.

Ros had a successful time with FUBC, winning the Thornbery (county) and Gazette Cup(District) with our ladies teams on several occasions.  She was also a keen supporter of the County and the North Hants Women’s Bowling Association.  She gained her county badge the old fashioned, hard way and was a great supporter of the county over the years, playing in the comps and county friendlies as and when selected.  She represented Hampshire at the National Championships at Royal Leamington Spa on four occasions, once in the County Fours as Hampshire champions in 1988 with Anne Tucker, Sylvia Goodenough and Doreen Fletcher and three times as skip in the County Triples, firstly as runners-up in 2000 with Sheila Forrester and Jennie Cole; secondly in 2002 with Stella Waller and Margaret Hughesas runners-up and, finally, in 2004 as Hampshire champions with Stella and Margaret again.  Ros also skipped the Triple that were runners-up in the county Benevolent Triples in 2001, with Sheila Forrester and Jennie Cole.

Domestically, Ros won the FUBC Ladies’ Singles in 1989 and again in 1999; she won the Ladies’ Pairs in 2000 with Jennie Cole and again in 2003 with Janice Doran.  In 2002 she won the Mixed Pairs with John Ward.
